Weekly Task 5

1. Can you explain what this picture is showing about collaborative learning (or group learning)?
This picture shows a complete process of group communication: a group should think deeply first, collect others’ deliberation; crystallize the outcome of group discussion, and make an assessment. I think a group of people can share their inner thoughts with others by effective communication. Also, people will omit irrelevant ideas or change their mind after group discussion.
2. What is your favorite part of this type of learning?
“Learning through reflection” is my favorite part because I usually lack various ideas. Therefore, I will take others’ opinions for reference and come up with another idea by following this step.
3. What would be the part that usually bothers you when working with others?
“Generating multiple perspectives” is the most difficult part for me. The reason why I choose this part is that I often think about a topic in the first person. If I can do a good job on this part, it will help me see one thing in several different aspects.
4. Give an example from your personal experience and elaborate on it.
In the past few weeks, each group in our class was asked to write an essay and revise it twice. My learning buddy and I learned a lot from each other’s writing style and peer editing. I saw her work in the second person; thus, my perspective may differ from her notion. When I got confused about some sentences of my buddy’s composition, I tried to guess, and then ask her if my thoughts corresponded to hers. In the final part of our discussion, we pointed out the problems respectively and made a meaningful assessment as possible as we can. I am unsure that whether our process and the outcome of this communication are proper. Maybe our discussion will get better and better after accumulating abundant experiences of group talk. All in all, I consider it good to have a complete and deep talk with my buddy on this assignment.

Dear Glory,
回覆刪除It's good to read your new post.
I think when we are asked to discuss any kind of issue as a group, the group learning process appears. Professors are willing to ask us to share each other’s opinions at first. After sharing and listening to others’ thoughts and ideas, we may have different and various perspectives on the issue. It is very interesting to work as a group. In my opinion, meaningful assessment is the most difficult part. Because we can’t make sure what we think is definitely right, we just try hard to let our conclusion make sense. When it comes to my favorite part, I have to say “collaborative deliberation.” It is time for us to discuss deeper in our topic, and we can raise many questions which we may not find before.
Your example is very interesting, and I think it is a common phenomenon happened around us. Once my literature instructor couldn’t figure out what I want to express in my essay, I was very upset at the time. When I talked to her for a long time, she knew what I mean eventually. I think it may have something to do with language; one simple sentence can have various interpretations. It is good to get to know others; thought by discussing together.
Dear Lily,
回覆刪除I am glad to see your perspectives on this issue. Your reflections of the most difficult part for you and your favorite part are reasonable and different from mine. To be honest, I think many parts of this chart are important for collaborative learning. Furthermore, your experience can also be seen in others’ school lives. It is common that people cannot get your points at times. You probably do not convey your ideas clearly enough to make others fully understand, or readers’ thoughts may differ greatly from yours. Do not be worried. Try to repeat or reorganize your ideas and words again to make them plain and brief. By explaining your concepts to readers in detail, they will be willing to appreciate your work and get a better understanding of what you say.
Truly yours,
Glory
Dear Glory,
回覆刪除Thank you for your advice. Although I am a junior, there are some terminologies which I never hear of. Therefore, I have difficulties in listening to some lectures which are related to specific fields I hardly know. For instance, I have taken the International Business Administration Program last year. Those required courses are taught in English. At the beginning, I thought I can catch up easily; however, there are many special terms such as marketing mix, brand equity and so on. Fortunately, professors would elaborate those terms in a simple way, and this helps me a lot. It is interesting that once we get familiar with this way, it is not difficult at all.
Dear Lily,
回覆刪除Wow! It is fortunate that you always share your experience with me on the blog. I remember that you have mentioned many courses that you took before. I think you may gain many things by taking those courses, right? In fact, I am curious about those courses. I have a suggestion: when you have free time, you can elaborate on your experiences and we can have a talk about courses or school life with each other online.
