Weekly Task 9 - The Strawberry Generation

Weekly Task 9

1. What do you think about this stigma?

For me, it is interesting to understand the origin and different meanings of “the strawberry generation” as time goes by from the essay. From the author’s perspective, she mentions that “the strawberry generation” not merely exists in youngster’s generation, but other generations as well. I cannot agree with her more. In my opinion, what kinds of traits some people have cannot represent the whole generation. More specifically, it is unfair for those who have characteristics that differ from the stereotype to be labeled “the strawberry generation.” Therefore, viewing someone as “the strawberry” by his or her year of birth is inappropriate.

2. Does the description match your self-identity or -realization?
If not, offer a counter claim.

Frankly speaking, sometimes I am egoistic. Although I seldom consider group interest my top priority, I have no intention of damaging the interests of others. As for the aspect of material living, I don’t want to follow the trend blindly; therefore, I live a life without too much temptation. Moreover, I have seen several pieces of news regarding a hot issue: highly-educated people take jobs that require few professional skills. So far, I have no idea about this condition. Perhaps, there is something wrong with our labor market and even the whole society.

When it comes to the ability of resisting great pressure and frustration tolerance, I think these mental conditions vary from person to person. As for me, I usually find ways to overcome the difficulties, consider failure a stepping stone to success, seldom giving up halfway. Thus, I don’t want to be called “the strawberry generation” owing to such reasons. Last but not least, we young people should strive to redefine the meaning of our generation or “the strawberry generation” instead of being mocked or looked down on.

  1. Dear Glory,
I quite agree with the author’s points as
the same as you. It is interesting that our generation is called as strawberry generation. However, as the author says strawberry generation not just exists in young generation but in other generations. In my opinion, mass media such as news on television would magnify the negative side of young generation such as unemployment rate of young generation and illegal events made by young generation. Actually, there is still positive news related to young generation. I remember that I saw on-line news few days ago. One is about my older school brother in the textiles and clothing department. He got the “fashion prize” of the International Clothing Competition this year. We Fu-Jen students and teachers are all proud of his performance. According the author’s definition of strawberry generation is referred to those who are born after 1981. I saw many cases that many people of strawberry generation run a business successfully. It is difficult and tiring to run a business on our own. These young people prove that we are not weak. Therefore, I think we can’t be categorized as a strawberry group just due to our birth date.
After reading your description of yourself, I believe that you belong to “individualism.” Sometimes, I think teamwork is quite annoying, but now I enjoy doing tasks with others. Like what we do now; we cooperate with each other to do this writing project, and I believe that it is a kind of learning for us. In addition, I appreciate that you say you usually find ways to overcome difficulties and seldom give up halfway. I am this kind person, so it is good that we have some common characteristics. I don’t like people call me strawberry generation, either. As a result, we youngsters have to work hard to make people’s point of view of us.

  2. Dear Lily,

There are two key points mentioned in your response:

    (1) It is great that you notice that mass media have a noticeable effect on the public since many people tend to believe news reports without critical thinking. In my opinion, people should refer to different versions of information rather than totally believing the media.

    (2) You use two examples (recent events) to support your idea – youngsters can prove themselves in their generation. The examples make it easier to understand what you are trying to convey. Great!

Furthermore, I am glad that I have something in common with you and I also agree with your thoughts -- it is a kind of learning for us to cooperate with each other to do this writing project. I hope that I will derive more pleasure from our cooperation and interaction.

    Thank you for your sharing.:)

    Sincerely,
           Glory
